According to a Smithsonian Magazine article, allergic reactions are caused by a unique protein (Fel D1) that the cat generates in its skin, urine, and saliva. All felines have it, but some, known as hypoallergenic felines, produce less of it.

When a cat licks itself, the saliva containing Fel D1 dries up and forms an allergen in the air, causing allergies in some people.

#1 Sphynx cat
